A mission to support, encourage, and showcase the work of local artists
The Key West Art Center has established a scholarship in honor of Martha Watson Sauer, a WPA artist and early member of the Art Center who arrived in Key West during the Great Depression at the age of 24 and stayed to make it the home that she returned to from travels around the world until her passing in 2005.
The $2,500 in total scholarship funds may be awarded to one Visual Arts student or divided among two deserving students and is intended for serious Keys high school students who wish to pursue an advanced degree in studio art and exhibit Martha's adventurous spirit, her powers of observation, her boundless curiosity about the world, and her dedication to the practice of making art. A permanent exhibit about the artist's life and work is on display at the Key West Art Center, and a portion of the proceeds from sales of her paintings, benefits the scholarship.
Please note: The scholarship is open to Senior students graduating any high school located in Monroe County, FL. Applications due April 3, 2026.
