Priscilla Coote will be doing a plein air study and a studio painting from it.  You can call Key West Art Center & Gallery, (305) 294-1241, to register.

Priscilla "takes" students to Bahia Honda State Park via video, where she paints from the water using her Amphibious Easel.  She explains how she chooses the subject matter and all the considerations that go into painting on the scene in an active environment.  Then students join her in the studio to paint along as she interprets her plein air painting into a finished studio work.  Students will be sharing what they create for a positive, personalized experience.

Priscilla is a lifelong painter who now exhibits and participates in plein air paintouts internationally.  A longtime Keys resident, she enjoys sharing what she has learned about painting our unique and special place.  Her work may be seen locally at Gallery on Greene in Key West, on Facebook at Priscilla Coote and on her website at, www.pcoote.com.

MATERIALS LIST

A table or free-standing easel to support your work will free your hands, give you a stable surface and be easier to see than artwork handheld or lying flat.

You will need to set up your space to show your face and sometimes your work (this could be as simple as holding up your laptop).

PAINT:  Any colors you already have.  Use the best quality paints you can afford.  They will give you much better results and last longer, too.  Really inexpensive paint can lead to frustration.  Most of the major brands have a "student grade."  Try to avoid these.

If you are purchasing paint for this workshop, a handful of quality colors is all you need.  You can get by with:

(a)  a dark red such as Alizarin Crimson;

(b)  a light yellow such as Cadmium Light, Pale or Lemon

(c)  a warm blue, more turquoise...Phthalo is okay if used very sparingly;

(d)  a cool blue such as Ultramarine;

(e)  Titanium White; and

(f)  Ivory Black

Optional and helpful are:

(a)  Yellow Ochre;

(b)  Burnt Sienna or Transparent Red Oxide; and

(c)  a deeper yellow or orange

BRUSHES:  Any that you have, bristle and nylon.  I use mostly the softer synthetic filberts these days.  At least one larger one, size 12 filbert or flat.  Also, a big soft craft brush such as goat hair for blending.

PALETTE KNIVES:  Any size

PALETTE:   Minimum size 9 x 12, glass, wood, disposable...all are fine.  It just should be ready to use.  I like to keep mine covered and use a Nordic Ware covered baking sheet pan from Amazon for this purpose (discussed during class).

STRETCHED CANVAS OR RIGID PANEL:  Gessoed, 11 x 14, 12 x 16, 16 x 20.  The larger your work, the longer it will take.

PAPER TOWELS

FOR OILS:  (a)  Thinner:  Gamsol is recommended  instead of turpentine or "odorless" mineral spirits for your health; (b)  Medium:  Gamblin Solvent-free Gel, Galkyd Medium or Neo-Megilp...no Liquin or Cobalt Drier.

FOR ACRYLICS:  One or more containers of water.  Do not leave your brushes sitting in them.

BRUSHES:  Any that you have, bristle and nylon.  I use mostly the softer synthetic filberts these days.  At least one larger one, size 12 filbert or flat.  Also, a big soft craft brush such as goat hair for blending.

NOTEPAD AND PENCIL IF YOU TAKE NOTES

OPTIONAL:  Gloves, baby wipes
