-- About the Class: Each week the instructor will demonstrate a different “en
plein air” topic relating to the tropical landscape, such as, composition,
perspective, light, shadows, values, color temperature and mixing, figures,
as well as, the instructor’s personal thoughts on working effectively
outdoors. The instructor’s preferred medium is watercolor, however, the
topics discussed apply to all mediums the students may bring to the class,
including, oil, acrylic, pastels and mixed media.
-- Supplies: All students will need a lightweight easel, folding chair, and a
portable bag for supplies. Travel light and be prepared for changes in the
weather on site. Be familiar with your medium of choice and the required
materials necessary to complete a painting. However, you must be able to
walk and carry your own supplies to each location. Bikes and scooters can
be parked closer to our painting sites than cars. Therefore, bring the
minimum needed to get the job done. Please click on the link below to see a list of
recommended basic supplies,
-- About the Instructor: Before moving to Key West, Karen Beauprie was a
public school teacher in Illinois. Painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor was a
hobby. After meeting local artist, Sandford Birdsey, her passion became
painting outdoors in watercolor. She has studied with many of the top plein
air watercolor painters in the world, including, Alvaro Castagnet and Keiko
Tanabe. Karen loves painting from a direct observation of the beautiful
landscape of Key West, including boats in the harbor, the beaches, and the
urban areas on Duval St. She is an exhibiting member of the Key West Art
Center, as well as, a member of the board of directors.
